There is a memorial on the eastern end of Waikiki honoring 179 men from Hawaii who died during World War I. It is called the War Memorial Natatorium and it was built as a sports facility with a 100 by 40 meter seawater swimming pool. The pool is now closed, but it was used by some of the most famous swimmers in the world, including Duke Kahanamoku, Buster Crabbe, and Johnny Weissmuller. There has been a controversy in recent years about whether to restore the entire Waikiki Natatorium or tear most of it down, preserving only the beautiful entryway arch.
