Not Everybody in Hawaii is a Hawaiian

When you are visiting Hawaii there are certain local customs and conventions you should know about. One of those is proper use of the word "Hawaiian" to describe a person. If a person lives in Hawaii, they are a Hawaii resident, but they are not a Hawaiian unless they have at least a small percentage of Native Hawaiian blood. You can demonstrate your sensitivity and awareness of local culture in Hawaii by not calling everybody who lives in Hawaii a Hawaiian.
