Navy Names New Submarine the USS Hawaii
In April of 2006 the U.S. Navy announced the third of their Virginia-class submarines would be named the USS Hawaii. This weekend, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle and United States Senator Daniel Inouye will attend a blessing for the submarine in Connecticut, at the shipyard where it is being constructed. The Navy named one other ship the USS Hawaii - a cruiser on which construction was begun during world war II, but never completed. The Navy also named one of their submarines after King Kamehameha the Great.
