Congress Will Debate Controversial Akaka Bill
This week the United States Congress will debate Hawaii senator Daniel Akaka's controversial "Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act" that would recognize a Native Hawaiian governing body similiar to the recognition granted to Native American tribes. Supporters of the bill believe Native Hawaiians should have the same opportunity to self-govern as Native Americans. There are two main opposition groups: Those who believe the Akaka Bill would unfairly grant and deprive special privileges based on race, and those who feel nothing short of independent nation status for Hawaii would be acceptable. This week's debate and vote will determine if the bill qualifies for a full debate and vote on the Senate floor. For more information see:
