On August 21, 1959, United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation declaring Hawaii to be the 50th state in the Union. That event is recognized every year by a Hawaii state holiday on the third Friday in August. In 2006 Hawaii Admissions Day falls on Friday, August 18. Schools, and state, county, and city government offices are closed on Admissions Day, but visitor attractions, shops, and city recreation centers remain open.
