Olympic swimmer and champion surfer Duke Kahanamoku was born August 24, 1890, and his birthday is celebrated every year at an event in Waikiki that includes many watersports competitions and a celebration of Duke's life. The 2006 Waikiki Oceanfest will take place August 19-27 and it will feature an outrigger canoe race, a paddleboard race, several surfing competitions, a volleyball tournament, a swimming race, and a surf polo tournament. On August 26 there will be a lei parade in Waikiki, a lei draping ceremony at the Duke Kahanamoku statue, and a luau open to the public at the Waikiki Aquarium.
