Every October, the Hawaii Book Publishers Association recognizes the best books published during the previous year by issuing Ka Palapala Pookela Awards in several different book categories. In 2006, 134 nominations were received and the winners were selected by the Hawaii Book Academy, a group of booksellers, educators, publishers, and media professionals.
