Photos of a 1946 Big Island Tidal Wave
Sixty years ago today, on April 1, 1946, a tidal wave originating in the Aleutian Islands struck the east coast of the Big Island of Hawaii without any warning. The wave killed more then 170 people, mostly in Hilo and Laupahoehoe, where it reached an average height of 30 feet. Here are some historic photos:
