The 700 acre Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on the southeast coast of Maui was established in 1992 as a home for shorebirds, migratory ducks, and endangered native water birds. A pedestrian boardwalk through the refuge was completed in 2005 but it never officially opened to the public because cracks appeared in the planks shortly after the walkway was installed. This week work began on repairing the boardwalk and officials hope it will be formally opened to the public in 2007.
