The geological formation pictured on the left is the
Iao Needle, a dramatic lava rock projection at the end of a ridge inside
Iao Valley State Park on the west side of the island of Maui. There is a short trail in the park that leads to a windy overlook where visitors can get good views the Iao Needle. The best views are usually in the morning because the formation is often hidden behind clouds. Other attractions in Iao Valley State Park include the Iao Valley itself and the multi-ethnic Kepaniwai Park Heritage Gardens.
