Why Sacred Falls State Park is Closed

Sacre Falls State Park Sacred Falls State Park is a 1370 acre park located about one mile south of Hauula Town on the windward side of Oahu. The park was named after an 80 foot waterfall that lies at the end of a narrow canyon. Hiking in the park has always been considered risky, because of slippery footing on the trail and the danger of flash floods in the narrow canyon. The park was completely closed to the public after a rock slide in the canyon killed eight hikers and injured fifty others on Mother's Day 1999. For more information about Sacred Falls State Park, the 1999 rock slide, and efforts to re-open the park, see:

  • Ideas For a Festive Red White and Blue Breakfast

Here are two of my favorite ideas for serving a red, white, and blue breakfast on the 4th of July. HEALTHY BREAKFAST: Layer plain unsweetened yogurt in tall, clear parfait glasses with fresh and perfect strawberries and blueberries. DECADENT BREAKFAST: Spread cream cheese on blueberry pancakes, and top them with with strawberry jam. You can "Hawaiianize" these recipes by replacing the strawberries and blueberries with tropical fruit, tropical fruit jam, and Hawaiian style pancakes. That will probably take away the red, white, and blueness of the recipes, but they will still be a delicious way to start celebrating!
